Tuk Tuk textiles specialises in traditional
textiles (Ulos) handmade by the Batak people of Northern Sumatra.
As Southeast asian tribal life disappears, treasured and ritual
items are harder to find. We are fortunate to offer a selection of
traditional textiles which have been produced to be used by the batak people not for a tourist market.
These
pieces are stunning artefacts and make beautiful décor or collection
pieces. They are a refreshing alternative from the Indian
and Bali
merchandise.
Ulos suit decorating styles from modern to Asian and eclectic interiors.
Colours vary from rich browns to indigo blues, from elegant simplicity
to richness in texture and colour.
These Ulos can be used as wall hangings, throws, runners, they
can made into large cushions without disturbing/cutting the piece.
Ulos are not readily available anywhere else in Australia.
The prices of these textiles is reasonable, many have limited
availability. They are hand woven according to traditional methods
handed down in villages since the begining of Batak history.
Currenty
we have 9 different Ulos varieties available. Each with it’s own
significant ceremonial/ritual purpose, from Ulos given in a ritual to a
sick person believed to have healing powers to pieces signifying
the joining of families and bringing of good luck.
